Dental tourism, a risky investment?

The lower cost of air travel made possible by the democratization of the Internet has given rise to medical tourism – an increasingly popular practice where people travel thousands of kilometers for healthcare at highly appealing prices, notably in the fields of cosmetic surgery and laser vision correction, as well as for dental care. Orthodontics is becoming another form of care much sought after by tourists seeking low-cost treatments. We strongly advise against this type of approach, however, due to the related risks.

Unlike most medical and dental treatments, an orthodontic treatment period often extends over two or more years. During this time, the patient requires multiple adjustment appointments with the orthodontist. A single trip is not sufficient to complete an orthodontic treatment. Thus, with all the travel for adjustments or even emergency appointments, what originally appeared to be a great deal begins to lose its lustre. In addition, because the dental clinics involved are not subject to Canada’s strict sterilization and hygienic standards, nothing can ensure the asepsis of the facilities and the materials used.

Many people believe, incorrectly, that it is more economical to have their orthodontic appliances installed abroad and then follow a course of treatment in Quebec. The reality is that, in most cases, the fees for the installation of appliances are comparable to those charged here. What’s more, the appliances and techniques used may be different from those commonly used in Quebec, which often means having to replace the appliances. Thus, the patient pays twice for installation.

Lastly, orthodontic practice abroad is not regulated by the Order of dentist of Quebec. In the event of complications, the patient cannot file a complaint with the order to report improper treatment. Therefore, any legal action must be taken abroad – a procedure that risks being both costly and complicated.

For all of these reasons, we strongly recommend not having orthodontic appliances installed abroad. Orthodontic treatment that begins and ends in Quebec is always the best option.
